Good and Bad magazine layouts

Magazines in todays professional standard have to fit a set certain amount of requirements, example, the alignment of text and images again the border and guides of the magazine all have to fit in place and look in a professional manner. A common issue is where white space if left unused or columns can either be too wide or thin for your eyes to read properly. Of course with this issue, its also good to mention the use of fonts, some magazines may use unreadable fonts and others may use too many fonts. It's important to keep to a font and only change if completely necessary.

A good magazine layout -

A good magazine takes into account all of the things labeled above as well as colours which clash with each other, images that don't look natural or an unbalanced layout to name a few.
Below is an example of a good magazine layout and design:
This magazine layout is good because it has a clear, illustrative border where the text shouldn't go as well as is spaced out nicely and in a manner which is easy on the eyes. The magazine spread itself takes on a black and white scheme to not detract the eyes of the reader from the text. The text is also used in the same font throughout the whole of the two pages.

In the two columns of each page, you will notice that the text goes all the way to the end of the column, not leaving any unneeded and bad looking gaps as well as is structured properly with paragraphs splitting up a change in subject as well giving the reader a chance to take a break.

A bad magazine layout -

A bad magazine layout doesn't take anything i've written above into account. In fact, not only does the example I will showing you break all of the rules above but it also clashes with colours horrifically.
The example:

As you can see with this example, the text immediately looks horrible on the black and white background image. Not only is the red hard to read because it isn't backed up with something making it bold but it also is used in a hard to read font. The black used in this page layout is just insult to injury when coupled with the horrible spacing and lack of taking into mind the spine of the spread.

Another issue with the alignment of the text is that on one page its over to the left too much to the spine and then on the first page it still isn't put to the centre properly and leans to the left still.

I feel like this spread had potential to be done well if they didn't use the  terrible background or at lest put a translucent border in which the text would be kept in properly. On top of this, the different coloured text definitely doesn't work and should be ditched all together with a more readable font like Arial.
